Shitty First Draft – Blog 1 (278 words)
Question 1 : What does Anne Lamott (2005) mean when she says, “The first draft is the child’s draft, where you let it all pour out and then let it romp all over the place…” ?
Ans: As we all know that children are like a immature person and are in a developing age-group . So they don’t have any idea of how the life is working and how the Life-cycle goes on, similarly, when a person tries to write his first draft, he thinks that he is immature, inexperienced and don’t have any idea of writing , like how to start and in what order each and every sentence should be typed, and many more. Anne Lamott wrote in her article about the “Shitty first Drafts” that when you start writing for the first time, you just type everything and every thought on the piece of paper and after that, you can just read it again on next day and can shape it in any way you want to . In this way you can edit , can retain the ideas you want to and can delete the thoughts which you are thinking is not appropriate. As Anne Lamott described in her article that most of the successful writers does same and even they don”t have any idea of what they are writing at the first, so they just write and shape it . In this line –“The first draft is the child’s draft, where you let it all pour out and then let it romp all over the place…” , she means to use an analogy in which she just relate the idea of immaturity and inexperience related to what we ( child and writer) are doing. Also as children play roughly , just like that, writing for the first time is like putting your ideas roughly, unorganized on a piece of paper.
